How to Tell if Your Fan Clutch is Bad.
Engine running warmer than it should?
  • Spin Test: With a cold engine, try to spin the fan by hand. It should have slight internal resistance and not free-spin loosely.

  • Post-Shutoff Test:     Run the engine briefly then turn it off. The fan should stop within 2 to 3 rotations; if it keeps spinning freely, the clutch is worn out.
  • Wobble Check: Grab the fan and rock it front-to-back. Side-to-side play indicates a failing bearing in the fan clutch or water pump.
